Some of the site's worst and most toxic people will be able to return to suspended accounts thanks to a decision by the CEO. It is the second moderation decision he has made since taking over, the first being unbanning Donald Trump.

Musk had promised to create a diverse council that would help adjudicate moderation decisions. Musk blamed political/social activist groups for breaking an alleged deal, a claim that advertisers deny. Many of the bans it has issued have been related to horrible abuse, harassment, and misinformation.

72.4% of respondents voted in favor of unbanning accounts, from a pool of over three million votes. It is difficult to know who voted, but it is worth remembering that Musk spent a long time trying to get out of buying a service that was filled with fake accounts.

Some accounts will be allowed back. Musk said that accounts that have broken the law would not be given a reprieve. Most people don't break the law by being awful people, so doing something illegal is an extremely high bar for moderation. While he has spent a lot of time engaging with right-wing complaints, Musk has signaled opposition to the idea of letting someone like Alex Jones back on his website.

A blanket restoration of most suspended accounts will have immense and widespread consequences, particularly in regions where the company's moderation and compliance capacities have been eviscerated.

He declared that comedy is legal. It seems like everything is going.
