In order to end the protests at the facility, the company has offered workers a settlement of over one thousand dollars. According to CNN, the pay is equivalent to one or two months of wages and comes after violent protests erupted Tuesday over not being paid.
The human resources department of the Apple manufacturing partner sent a text message to workers asking them to return to their dormitories and promising to honor pay agreements. Workers who agreed to quit their jobs at the factory were offered 8,000 and another 2,000 after they boarded buses to leave the facility.
Zhengzhou was forced to lock down in October due to a covid outbreak at the factory. Tens of thousands of people signed up to fill vacancies when workers fled. The new hires were promised a subsidy if they completed 30 days on the job, with a second bonus to be paid after 60 days.
The first subsidy payment will be issued on March 15th, and the second in May, but the bonus payments will be delayed until next year. One worker told CNN that the new recruits felt cheated because they had to work more days to get their bonus.
Changes to payment dates were miscommunications. A technical error occurred during the process of hiring new workers, according to a statement from the company. An input error in the computer system caused us to apologize and guarantee that the pay is the same as agreed. Apple said in a statement that it was working closely with Foxconn to make sure their employees' concerns are addressed.
