The apartment made of concrete, isolated, and full of incredible art feels wrong for Louis de Pointe du Lac after the first episode ended. This isn't Louis' apartment, it's Armand's The finale revealed that the fastidious and dedicated manservant, Rashid, was actually a vampire. If you were a fan of the books, this wouldn't have been a big deal. One of the best jokes that ever happened on IWTV was referring to Rashid as "armand-coded." The entire season has been Armand-coded and the reveal was choreographed from the beginning.
The whole premise of the series becomes more and more absurd if we know that Louis and Rashid are in an intimate relationship. Louis tells the story of his first abusive relationship to a third party in front of his current boyfriend, who may or may not be abusive, in an interview with the vampire. In front of the vampire he is currently in, he recalls the worst parts of his relationship with Lestat, but also the best parts, emphasizing over and over the vampire bond that they shared. Standing in the room with him motivates the motivation to exaggerate the worst parts.
We have evidence that parts of Louis' story have been edited or practiced. It happens when Daniel replays the tapes from the 70s, and when Louis can't remember whether or not it was raining on a particular night. When it comes to the fact that his powerful, potentially psychopathic, definitely magical, 500-year-old vampire boyfriend is listening in on his conversations, it's not a stretch to say that what he's saying is influenced by him.
There are some moments that start to raise some eyebrows. If you're a fan of the books, you'll know that Lestat and Louis don't have a fight like the one in episode five. They fight in the books, it just isn't that bad. Do you know which vampire is fighting? There are two people, Lestat and Armand. The Vampire Lestat shows Louis being dragged along the ground.
The writers of Interview With the Vampire may have taken inspiration from The Vampire Lestat. They took bits and pieces of lore and world-building from six of Anne Rice's books. The character of "Rashid" is a minor vampire in 2001's Blood and Gold. We can either think that the writers have been inspired by other books or we can think that the fight was not accurate because it was Armand-coded.
There is a chance that Lestat and Louis are being manipulated by Armand, a vampire with mind-control abilities, who has taken the worst parts of his own memories and put them into their relationship. It is true that Lestat and Louis had a brutal fight, but the specifics of the fight have been affected by Armand because he had a brutal fight with Lestat. I'm not trying to excuse Lestat's actions or make him seem like he's not a monster; he's very much an abusive jagweed and a horrible partner, but within Louis' retelling he may not be portrayed in the most charitable light.
There were many clues that this was not Louis' home, such as the isolated nature of the apartment and the fact that all of the people were sworn to secrecy upon entering. It is very similar to Armand's night island. Night Island was purchased by Armand in order to keep Daniel from abandoning him. Night Island is also a vampire paradise. He runs away only to be dragged back by someone else. The apartment is very similar to Night Island. Louis is stuck here, unable to leave, and reliant on Armand's money and connections to survive.
AMC announced in April that a digital original called The Night Island is coming. It is an exclusive resort open only from sunset to sunrise and caters to an exclusive clientele of vampire and mortals with strict rules in place that still can't prevent each night from turning into a disaster.
The apartment is extremely sterile. There is a lot of beautiful art, but not much of Louis. The only piece of art that I can think of that is exclusive to Louis is Really Transformation by Ron Bechet. There is a person in the living area. It might be possible. He was also bought in the 1500s. Louis' house on Rue Royal was full of rich colors and warm lighting. His brother's funeral was the only time he wore black. In every episode he was shown a book in his hand and he was surrounded by books.
Lestat hid the fact that he could fly. Louis thought it would make him feel better about himself. The only books in the apartment are hung from the ceiling. Louis can't get to them because they are out of his reach, so he has to fly up and get them. There is a constant reminder that Louis is weak.
In the first episode, Daniel is given a tour of the apartment by Armand, who mentions that the architect was a sentimentalist while pointing out a tree that has been planted inside the apartment. Louis is a man who is constantly seen outside even though he is a vampire. He loves to sit in Jackson Square, he takes his daughter for a boat ride in the bayou, but in a child-city that is built up in a desert, it is not surrounded by green space so much.
It makes sense that a sentimentalist would put a tree in the middle of the apartment if it's not a paradise for Louis. Louis has not left this apartment in a very long time because of his fear of being discovered, as well as the influence of Armand.
He is not to be trusted at the end of the night. The whole season is Armand-coded. The boy has fangs the size of the Ottoman empire and is a master manipulator. Armand takes mansplain, manipulates male wife to insane levels. He's a weird little gremlin who plays with blenders and starts a podcast, but he's willing to do anything to keep what he likes, and Louis is one of them.
It's clear that Armand gave permission for Daniel to come into Louis' life and ask probing questions, but he has. It seems that Armand is trying to control Louis rather than stop Daniel. There isn't a way to tell what part of Louis' story is his story and what part is due to Armand.
When you're 500 years old, memory may make a monster out of you. The signs that the entire season has been affected by Armand are only visible when you rewatch the season, which speaks to the incredible effort of the writers who knew what they were doing with this. The second season of Interview With the Vampire will reveal more and more ways in which Armand has fucked with Louis, Lestat, and Daniel, and I think it will be very interesting. I am looking forward to watching it happen.
