Republican Kelly Tshibaka is expected to lose his bid for reelection to the U.S. Senate.

The race was called off by the AP.

According to the AP, Murkowski won with the state's new ranked choice voting system after neither she nor Tshibaka secured more than 50% of first-choice votes. The incumbent won with 54.3% of the vote, compared to Tshibaka's 46.3%.

After voting to convict him in his second impeachment trial, Murkowski drew the ire of Donald Trump.

Tschibaka was endorsed by Trump in a high-profile effort to oust the incumbent.

Due to the new ranked choice voting system in Alaska, the results of the race were not announced for weeks.

If a candidate gets over 50 percent of the vote, he or she will win the election. The votes of those who voted for the eliminated candidate are redistributed to those who voted for the other candidate.

The process goes on until one candidate gets a majority of the vote.

Even though they are both Republican candidates, Murkowski and Tshibaka were able to be on the ballot.

Pat was one of the candidates in the ring. Despite suspending his campaign, Republican Buzz Kelley was on the ballot.
