The mission team took the instrument offline after it experienced a malfunction. There was a problem with the Mid-Infrared Instrument when it was in MRS mode. The observatory continued to make observations despite the mission team taking MIRI offline.
The damage to one of the mirror segments was caused by a large micrometeoroid. The telescope's performance won't be affected by the damage, and the mission team announced earlier this month that they had restored operational status. With everything in the green, the Webb has once again turned its light to the stars and captured some amazing images. A new image of the largest moon of the planet was recently uploaded onto the internet.
