With his 74th-minute goal against Costa Rica on Wednesday, Spain's Gavi became the third-oldest goal scorer in World Cup history and youngest since Brazil's Pelada in the 1958 tournament.

The youngest player to play in a major international tournament for Spain was when he stepped on the field to start the game.

"I didn't think I'd be here at this age," he said through an interpreter. I am so happy to be here. This is not the end of the process. I need to continue.

When he scored in the World Cup final, he was 17 years old. He is the youngest person to score in a World Cup when he did so in the quarterfinals.

The youngest scorer in the inaugural 1930 tournament was from Mexico, who was 18 years and 93 days old by the time he scored.

A driving run from Alejandro Balde pierced the Costa Rica defense and after goalkeeper Keylor Navas partially cleared the ball, Alvaro Morata found Gavi.

In one of the most impressive displays of skill in the tournament so far, the teenager struck it with the outside of his boot and it went in off the right post.

He was the player of the match.

It was a good game. "I'm really happy that we started from the beginning to win this game." I'm going to wait for the next one. I'm happy that I won the award, but I'm happy for all of them because they did a great game today.

I respect everyone but on the field, I bring out my best. I'm proud to be in that place.

It was a historically dominant win for Spain, who didn't allow a single shot and recorded the most passes in a World Cup match since 1966.

There was a lot of that dictated by the two teenagers in the middle, with Pedri starting in front of Busquets.

Spain's first goal was to control the game throughout, according to Luis Enrique. In possession of the ball, we were exceptional.

We still have room to improve, but all 16 players were excellent. I'm not sure who will play against Germany. I have never repeated a starting 11.

Spain's victory was the most one-sided of the World Cup so far.
