Even though England can do better, Spain can do better.

They will face a Germany side who will be fighting for their future in this tournament after their shock defeat by Japan.

There was still a lot to be happy about for Spain and their supporters at Al Thumama Stadium, but it was obvious from the start that this was a huge mistake and the score reflected the huge gulf between the two sides.

Costa Rica won a play-off against New Zealand in June to get to the World Cup, but they are likely to be one of the first teams to go.

After just half an hour, the game was finished as a contest because Spain ripped through them so quickly.

They kept coming forward in waves in the second half and more goals followed even after they made a number of changes.

Costa Rica out-passed and outclassed

Defeat to Spain was Costa Rica’s biggest loss in the World Cup, conceding as many goals as they did in their previous eight games in the competition.

Costa Rica were outclassed and failed to get a shot at goal. Four touches in the Spain area and two in each half was the closest they came to that.

Gary thought the statistics were a sign of how bad the England team was in the tournament.

"Well done to Spain, they've done their job, well done!" he said. I didn't think Costa Rica would get any worse in the second half, but they did. They were a bit uneasy. They weren't clean.

I can't just say that Spain is doing well. Costa Rica are the first team in over three decades to not have a chance at goal.

They have had several World Cup. There wasn't anything to see today. I don't know what's happening.

We know that Spain keep the ball, but that is as bad as it gets for a team with a lot of experience.

"Spain have been brilliant but I'm tempted to say this game won't tell us much about them in this tournament," said Rob Green. Costa Rica's strength in the opposition has not made it hard.

It was a walk in the park for them. Costa Rica knew the game was over when Spain made the second half substitution.

'The perfect performance' by Spain

Guillem Balague, a Spanish football expert, preferred to focus on the positives for Spain, despite the fact that not allowing your opponent a sight of goal while scoring seven yourself is not to be sniffed at.

"After three goals Costa Rica had given up, it was just the perfect performance," he said.

How many shots do you think Costa Rica will take? Is that an attempt or something? zero You don't get these types of performances in the World Cup the same way you don't get them in England.

The level is the same. It seems like they are ahead of the rest.

Should Spain just enjoy a rare good start?

Maybe we should focus on the fact that Spain won the World Cup for the first time and not worry about the size of the victory.

They had lost their first match in three previous tournaments, including in South Africa 2010 where they went on to win the title.

In a tournament that has been full of shock results in its first few days, Spain's young stars like Gavi and Pedri sent out a statement of intent that they could be the ones causing some surprises in the coming weeks.

It's what Spain needs. They had a few questions for the young players coming into the tournament. It has been a great training session for them because it has been.

It has been a warm up. If you get more than 1,000 passes in a game, that's an amazing achievement.

What was the Spanish verdict?

Spain’s victory over Costa Rica is their biggest in the World Cup, and the biggest in the competition since Portugal beat North Korea by the same scoreline in 2010

Spain's players seemed happy with their performance and outcome.

"I don't think it was a question of Costa Rica being bad, it was a question of Spain being good," said Olmo. Our team was important.

The win was what we were supposed to get. The game was taken to them by us and we deserved to win. Our team is strong and that is what we need to follow. It was a confidence booster.

England's boss was happy with his side's attacking display against Iran but was unhappy at seeing them concede a couple of late goals, while Spain's boss was happy with his team's performance but said they can do better.

The goal of the team is to dominate the play and have the ball.

"Your opponent gets tired and can't get into it, our pressing was exceptional and the 16 players we used were superb."
