The Heritage Foundation will air ads during football games on Thanksgiving Day and through the weekend that attack the same-sex marriage bill moving through Congress with false statements.

The same-sex marriage bill that would codify rights of same-sex married couples is the subject of the ads.

Democrats, and the 12 Republican senators who voted in favor of the bill, have been vocal about their plans, which have been in the works since the Supreme Court overturned abortion rights.

There are false claims on social media that the legislation would threaten the tax-exempt status of nonprofits that don't believe in gay marriage.

The tax-exempt status of religious organizations that object to same-sex marriage will not be jeopardized.

During the Thanksgiving Day National Football League games, the ads will air on NBC, New York Giants, Dallas Cowboys, Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions on CBS.

The ads will air during college football games in Iowa, Indiana, West Virginia, and Wyoming, as well as on Fox News over the next five days.

The bill isn't written to protect religious employees in the workplace, according to Jay Richards.

The bill only applies to people who are acting under color of state law.

The federal government would be required to grant the same privileges to same-sex married couples as it does to opposite-sex married couples. Same-sex marriages performed in other states would need to be recognized by the state. If the Supreme Court overturns rulings that established the right to same-sex marriage, there will be two new requirements.

What To Watch For

The bill passed a procedural vote in the Senate last week that will allow it to be debated before a final vote. Democrats were able to get 12 Republican votes to reach the 60-vote threshold after adding language about protecting the rights of religious organizations and a provision stating that marriage is between two people. The bill will return to the House for a final vote before it is sent to the president. The bills were amended after they passed the House. The Democrats want to finish the bill before the Republicans take office.

Big Number

A little over one million dollars. According to Fox, the Heritage Foundation is spending the most money on a campaign in its history.

Tangent

Similar claims to the ones the Heritage Foundation makes in the ads were shared on social media. The bill will allow the IRS to revocation the tax exempt status of churches that hold fast to traditional marriage and force religiously affiliated adoption centers and foster care providers to close down.

Crucial Quote

According to a constitutional law professor at Southern Methodist University, there was no reason to believe that this would result in the loss of tax status, charitable status or tax exemption for religious groups. There is a double lock on the door with the Senate amendments.

The Senate voted to protect same-sex marriages.
