According to a research firm, Apple supplier Cirrus Logic may have implied that the next generation of the phone will have buttons.
The Texas-based company said in a letter to shareholders that it expects to bring a new HPMS component to market in smartphones next year. HPMS stands for high- performance mixed-signal chips, which include drivers for the Taptic Engine in the iPhone.
The new component will come to market in the back half of next year, according to the CEO of the company.
According to an investor note last week, the new component that Cirrus Logic mentioned will most likely be part of additional Taptic Engines for the haptic buttons on iPhone 15 Pro models.
The biggest change to our thinking here is to model $1 of new content in the IP15 Pro models. To be clear, the company hasn't said much here other than that the chip is mixed signal and not in the power domain. When looking at potential use cases, the largest change in new iPhone models next year is the removal of the buttons, which would require additional drivers for the haptics engine, making it the most likely use case for new content.
In October, a well-known Apple analyst said that the next generation of the phone will have power buttons and solid state volume. The Home button and Force Touch on newer MacBooks are examples of the Haptic feedback that will be provided by the devices.
It would eliminate moving parts that can wear out or break over time if Haptic buttons were added to the iPhone. The standard iPhones are expected to have buttons.
