According to a source, the Houston Texans benched starting quarterback Davis Mills and replaced him with backup Kyle Allen.
The benching came on the heels of Mills' worst performance of the season, a 23-10 loss to the Washington Commanders. Mills completed 58.6% of his passes for 169 yards and two picks against the Commanders.
During his Wednesday news conference, the Texans coach refused to name a starting quarterback, saying he didn't want to give the opponent an advantage.
The network reported that Allen would start.
The Texans wanted Mills to become the quarterback of the future after he showed promise in his first season. He has struggled through his sophomore year, with his completion percentage falling to 61.9% and his passer rating dipping to 78.1, ranking in the bottom 10 in the league in both categories.
Mills has had an NFL-high 11 passes picked off, which is more than last season's total.
The switch to Allen will provide a spark to an offense that ranks 32nd in total yards per game and 25th in passing yards per game.
Allen has been in the league for five years after spending his first four years with the Carolinas. He has 24 touchdown and 17 interception in his career.
