Musk breaks promise to form Twitter moderation panel, blames activists

Many wondered what happened to Musk's plan to form a "widely diverse" content moderation council to help him weigh any decisions to reverse permabans. After meeting with civil rights groups, he announced that plan, but never mentioned it again. It took four days for Musk to give an update on the oversight council that he never created.

Musk said that he had only promised to form the council if activists stopped pushing advertisers to boycott his platform.

A large coalition of political/ social activist groups agreed not to starve us of advertising revenue if I agreed to this condition. The deal was broken.

Some activists who attended the meeting, including Free Press co-CEO Jessica Gonzalez, denied making a deal with Musk.

Gonzalez also co-leads the #StopToxicTwitter coalition that is calling on advertisers to pause ads until Musk rights the ship. I didn't make a deal like that.

The NAACP President denied that activists made a deal with Musk.

Johnson said that they wouldn't make such a deal. The first thing democracy does is come first. It is our duty, as it has been since our founding, to speak out against threats to our democracy, because the decisions being made at the social media site are dangerous. There is no safe harbor for hate speech and violent conspiracy.

When Ars reported on the meeting between Musk and activists, it was obvious that Gonzalez would continue to promote the campaign. Gonzalez said at that time that Musk's promises, including forming a council to review content decisions, were just the beginning of a long process.

Gonzalez told Ars that Musk is using activists as a scapegoat for his own poor decision making regarding brand safety.

Gonzalez told Ars that Musk is losing advertisers because he has acted irresponsibly and slashed content moderation teams that help keep brands safe. Musk is responsible for the exodus of advertisers.

The communications department was shut down and no one was available to speak about it.
