In the wake of a record number of border crossings, Republicans in Congress are threatening to impeach the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, setting the stage for a confrontation with Democrats in the next session of Congress.

The next Congress, which will be split between a Democrat-controlled Senate and a Republican-controlled House, is likely to face more legislative stalemates on the issue of immigration.

The incoming chairs of the House Oversight and House Judiciary Committees are considering launching probes into the work of Mayorkas.
The Department of Homeland Security said Mayorkas has no plans to resign and called on Congress to "come to the table and work on solutions for our broken system and outdated laws."

More than 450 miles of border walls were built by the federal government during Trump's time in office. According to the Washington Post, Biden halted the construction of the wall after taking office, but his administration has spent more than $2 million on repairs to the wall.
