The survey, which Insider obtained and is publishing in full for the first time, was mentioned in a lawsuit against the billionaire over his compensation package.
The survey was sent to Ira Ehrenpreis, the chair of the company's compensation committee. In her email, Toledano identified two issues employees said they were facing: concerns over compensation and concerns about leadership at the company.
Toledano said in the email that there would be a review of the results. It's not good on comp, VPs, and leadership in general.
More than 70% of those surveyed said they trusted Musk and the executives to balance employee interests with those of the company.
A majority of employees feel fairly compensated for their work.
Employees complained about Musk's company culture, leadership, approachability and communication, work timelines, and firings in responses to a selection of questions.
One worker in the survey said that "Tesla is hemorrhaging highly talented, ferociously driven people who truly believe in the company's vision and continue to hope for its success" Elon is a technical leader of the highest order and yet is seen as an unapproachable tyrant who devalues the contributions of the staff.
The worker said that the company fails to distinguish between technical leadership and people leadership.
A worker wrote that they felt like they were going to be fired and that they weren't planning on sticking around.
One worker said that Musk needed to change and another said that people were beingbullied by Musk.
At the time of the survey, the production of the Model 3 was not going well. Musk said that the company was just weeks away from filing for Chapter 11.
The crushing blow of the ramp and team demoralization of the Model 3 battery has been extremely disappointing. The lack of accountability to the poor level of design review, non-reality based scheduling and in-sufficient resource allocation has led me to lose all trust in the leader of this company.
98% of employees said they were proud of the impact that Musk's company is making.
During the first day of testimony in a shareholder's lawsuit against Musk over his pay package, it was noted that the survey was cited.
The executives in charge of approving the CEO's pay package were said to be concerned about the threat the CEO posed to them.
Insider had a request for comment from Musk and aTesla, but they didn't reply.
The quotes were consistent with a long history of how some people felt.
The billionaire is known for his intense behavior. He is known to work as much as 120 hours a week and sleep on the factory floor at the two companies. According to former executives, the billionaire can be a difficult person to work for, prone to bouts of anger and even instances of rage, and he has denied the allegations.
The engineers criticized Musk's technical knowledge, which led to the firing of several employees.
