Republicans in Florida want to change the law so they can have a candidate for president.
The state's sign to run elections law needs to be changed.
The GOP legislature and leaders were sworn in.
The top Republicans in the Florida legislature said Tuesday that they would be willing to change state election law so that the governor could run for president.
"I think that's a great idea," Florida House Speaker Paul Renner said in a press conference with reporters at the state capitol, when asked about possible changes to the state's so-called "resign to run" election law. I believe we will look at that.
Kathleen Passidomo said it would be an honor to have someone from Florida run for president. It would be a good idea to change the law, she said. She thinks that a Florida governor should be allowed to run for president.
If he ran for president, he would have to step down as governor even if he lost. When it comes to the presidency, candidates have 10 days to resign, but how that is defined isn't clear and has been open to different interpretations.
If he were to win the presidency, he would have to resign from his current office.
A clarification from the legislature would make it easier for DeSantis to run for president and return to the governor's mansion if he fails. In 2008 the law was loosened. Charlie Crist was once a contender for John McCain's running mate, but then changed his mind.
He hasn't committed to serving out all four years as governor, despite rumors that he might seek a White House bid.
Republicans and right-wing media want him to run. A Morning Consult/Politico tracking poll shows that a majority of potential GOP primary voters would vote for Ron DeSantis. Donald Trump made his presidential run official in mid-November.
There could be more than one opponent in a 2020 primary. Other prospective candidates include former Vice President Mike Pence.
The Republican supermajority in the Florida House and Senate is likely to be deferential to the governor's priorities after the election. After being elected to their leadership posts on Tuesday, both Renner and Passidomo took questions from the media.
It's not clear if he would want to keep running for president while also being the leader of the third- largest state in the US. The congressman resigned when he ran for governor. Jeanette Nuez would become the first woman to be governor of Florida if he resigned.
