The epicenter of the earthquake was in northwestern Turkey, causing damage to some buildings. A number of people were injured while trying to flee their homes.

The Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency said the earthquake was centered in the town of Golkaya in Duzce province.

At 4:08 a.m., it hit. It was felt in Istanbul and other parts of the region. One of the aftershocks had a magnitude of 4.3.

In the province that was hit by a deadly earthquake 23 years ago, many people rushed out of their buildings after the earthquake woke them up.

Most of the injuries sustained during the panic were from jumping from balconies or windows. The Interior Minister said one of them was in a serious condition.

The power was cut as a safety measure.

The courthouse in Duzce was damaged by the earthquake. The shop collapsed on a narrow street.

Some of the people who gathered in the main square were wrapped in blankets.

Schools in the region are being closed as a precautionary measure.

The earthquake that hit Duzce in 1999 killed hundreds of people. In August of that year, 17,000 people were killed by a powerful earthquake in northwest Turkey.

Most of the buildings in the area were rebuilt or fortified after the 1999 earthquakes.

Turkey is frequently shaken by earthquakes.
