Apple said earlier this month that it expected lower shipments of premium models due to disruptions at the same facility. Most of the iPhone production takes place in Zhengzhou, a city with an estimated 200,000 workers.
According to the Wall Street Journal, there were protests near the Zhengzhou facility. In order to prevent another outbreak in Zhengzhou, the employees of Foxconn were forced to live and work on-site with limited food and supplies. Many workers have escaped from the locked down facility, leading to incentives like higher salaries and bonuses for staff.
Hundreds of workers chant "Give us our pay" while surrounded by riot police and people in hazmat suits as they protest at the campus. Workers chanting "Defend our rights!" were seen on livestream. According to the Agence France-Presse, they confronted the police officers. A person in a social media video said that FoxConn never treated humans as humans.
Workers on live streams said they were protesting over food shortages and delayed payments. They changed the contract so that we wouldn't get the subsidy. One worker said during a live stream that they don't get food. We will fight if they don't address our needs.
The Wall Street Journal reported that most of the video footage has already been removed, but that it has confirmed events shown in the videos with workers. By Wednesday night, the Chinese social media platform Weibo seemed to be censoring the #FoxConn Riots.
