Lakers guard Patrick Beverly was ejected for shoving Suns center Deandre Ayton to the floor late in Los Angeles' 115-105 loss on Tuesday, but the veteran said his actions were prompted by how Phoenix players were treating L.A. swingman Austin Reaves
"Got a person on the ground, two people looking over mean-mugging and puffing their chest out and referees don't get into it to sort of separate it, control the game, so I'm going to stand up for my teammate."
While Reaves was on the floor, Booker made contact with the second-year player then stood over him and stared at him while he was on the floor. When Ayton stood over Reaves, Beverley body checked Ayton with his left shoulder, because the Suns big man wasn't looking.
"I'm not going for that," she said. It's unfortunate that it happened on tv. Regardless of what's happening, I like to protect my teammates. I'm a person who likes to play with things. I commit to a team when I put on the jersey, and I commit to a city when I leave. I'm a person who likes to play with things.
It's a very unfortunate situation.
Ayton was T'd up after being assessed a technical foul and ejected for his hit on Reaves.
Reaves didn't see much after he was hit in the nose. I thought I was bleeding, so I fell. I loved seeing Pat have my back when I did turn around. Everyone is the same. We would do the same thing for him if it was him.
From the end of the game to the time that Reaves spoke to reporters, he said he appreciated him four or five times.
Reaves said that he is a team player. He knows who he is with. You are respectful of whoever is on his team. You adore him. He's on your team, that's great. He is a pest when he is not. I admire him for who he is and standing up for me.
The Suns did not appreciate the same things.
Monty Williams said that the league needed to take a look at the plays. It's becoming silly. I can't come up with a word.
Ayton kept his cool after the incident.
He said that the man didn't take anything out of his pocket and that he wouldn't react.
Booker said he has seen Beverley use a cheap shot before.
Booker told Pat to stop pushing people in the back during his on-court interview after the game. They should be pushed in the chest. All I have to say is that.
"I'm not going back and forth with all of that," she said when she was told of Booker's comments.
L.A.'s three-game winning streak is still intact despite the altercation that grabbed the spotlight from Anthony Davis' record-setting performance. Davis became the first player in league history to score at least 35 points, 20 rebound, five steal and five blocks in a game, as he finished with 37 points on 11-for 17 shooting and 15-for-16 from the free throw line.
Davis confronted Ayton after he pushed the center.
Davis said that they wouldn't allow anyone to make their teammate feel like they're not a man. That's not right.
Lakers coach Darvin Ham was okay with the spirit of Beverley's action, despite his suggestion that the league could impose further discipline against him.
You don't want to be a tough man, you want to be a tough basketball player. At the end of the day, I'm not angry with him. He'll probably go through some type of consequence for protecting his teammate.
At the end of the day, we have to be together as the Lakers.
When asked if he was worried about the NBA punishing him, he replied, "for sure."
It was very un professional by myself. He said that there could have been a different reaction. I'm a large boy. I'll take my punishment when they arrive.
