  • Google is introducing App Bundles for Google TV and Android TV.
  • Both smart TV OSes will require App Bundles instead of APKs from May 2023.
  • The aim is to enhance the user experience of smart TV owners who often need to uninstall apps because of their confined storage options.

The search giant said that next year it will need to have app bundles. Smart TVs that usually ship with low storage are the ones that will be favored by the move.

Many smart TVs have limited amounts of storage space on average. Users are more likely to meddle with the installation and uninstallation of applications. The app bundles are said to be lifesavers for consumers going forward.

App Bundles are better than their predecessors, according to the search engine.

AAB is a new format for developers to split their apps into different components instead of being bundled under a single package.

The AAB makes the app install only the required components if it wants to get installed. The goal is to decrease the storage on the devices, and the average savings is 20%.

The app is fully installed. Additional components will be installed later if necessary. The app is getting up and running fast. Data is saved for users who install or update their apps through mobile data.

The ability to archive an app instead of uninstalling it is one of the key benefits of AABs, which can save you a lot of storage space. We often complain about the low storage of the Chromecast, but this is great news for it.

The App Bundles are supported on all phones, tablets, and autos.

It would take an average engineer about three days to migrate existing TV apps. Developers will be given six months to complete the transition, with a deadline of May 23, 2023.

The consequences of not adhering to the deadline are warned by the search engine. TV apps that are not transitioned in time may be hidden. If you're working on a brand new TV app, be sure to use the bundle from the beginning!

There are methods and a developer guide to learn about the new migration to app bundles.
