There are two reasonable responses to the prospect of a long, cold winter, one being to embrace the chill and the other being to follow the warmth.

Santa Barbara, California

Santa Barbara is a great place to go for a beach stroll or canyon hike. The area is well known for its celebrity residents, but the real attraction is its relaxed beach town vibe. There are lots of outdoor dining and shopping options on the State Street Promenade. State Street leads to West Beach, where the more adventurous can rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, and those just out for a nice view can stroll the wharf.

Key West, Florida

Key West is at the farthest end of the Florida Keys and has its own culture that is more eclectic than the others. This southernmost point on the continental USA is known for its literary history, fresh seafood and lots of hopping bars. The Ernest Hemingway Home, the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, and the chance to sail during sunset are among the top things to do in the area.

It is rare for Palm Springs to have a type of cool that shows up on the temperature. The desert has a bit of a dry cold during the winter, but the average high temperature never drops below 70F. The Salton Sea and Joshua Tree National Park are less than an hour away if you want to do more than laze around on the beach.

The weather in the Phoenix area is so great that 15 Major League Baseball teams relocate to the area for training before the season starts. On average, Phoenix gets almost 300 days of sunshine a year. In the middle of summer, when temperatures shoot past 100F, you might wish for a little less sun, but the clear blue mid 70s days of late winter are ideal for outdoor fun. The Succulents and spiny plants of the desert mingle with art exhibitions, or you can explore the sandstone formations on the trail at the Desert Botanical Gardens, if you aren't interested in baseball.

The Everglades, Florida

The baseball teams may be onto something because the rest of the league is in Florida. It is common for Florida to have the warmest temperatures in the US mainland during the winter, with the warmest city and the warmest beaches. Outside of Hawaii, the warmest park is the Everglades. It is one of the most popular times of the year for visitors and one of the best times of the year to spot wildlife. migratory birds fly to Florida in search of warmer climates because of the drying of the marsh. Coastal Georgia

If you're going to Georgia, you could stop in Savannah and never leave. A world of barrier islands and twisting waterways can be found further out to the coast. The start of a string of subtropical islands dangling down the coast of Georgia, all with mild winter weather but each with its own personality, is just a half hour drive from Tybee Island. Descendants of Africans who were slaves on the plantations on the island until the 19th century live in a small village on the island. The Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve Visitors Center is a great place for nature lovers to visit. The gateway to Georgia's Golden Isles is historically a playground for the wealthiest Americans.
