Are you eligible to apply for the Amex Business Platinum?

You might be wondering if you are eligible to apply if you have any interest in this card. The terms and conditions of the card are the first thing we will look at, followed by some of the more specific application rules that Amex has in place.

Amex Business Platinum application terms

The Amex Business Platinum does not allow current or former cardholders to earn its welcome offer more than once.

The application terms are clear.

“Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this Card. We may also consider the number of American Express Cards you have opened and closed as well as other factors in making a decision on your welcome offer eligibility.”

If you have more than one Amex card open, the issuer could deny you as well. If you can't remember, you can check the issuer's handy tool to see if you qualify for an introductory offer.

It isn't cut and dried as much as you might think.

Amex application restrictions

Amex currently limits most people to four personal and business credit cards from its own stable at any given time and anywhere from five to 10 cards at most. The Amex Business Platinum is similar to The Platinum Card from American Express in that it is a card rather than a credit card.

If you have applied for some of the truly fantastic offers Amex has to offer, you might be close to the ceiling.

The issuer won't approve everyone up to those maximums. If you have a lot of Amex cards, it will be harder to convince the applications department that you need another product.

Amex only approves applicants for up to two cards in a 90 day period. If you applied for a new card recently, you may have to wait.

If you already have a few American Express cards with high credit limits, Amex might deny your application.

Credit card application restrictions are related.

You might be concerned about applying for the Amex Business Platinum if you're looking for a Chase card with an introductory bonus of 80,000 bonus miles after you spend $5,000 in the first three months of your account opening. Fortunately, business cards from American Express don't count towards that threshold, so you can get the Amex Business Platinum and apply for a Chase card at the same time.

Does it matter if you already have the personal Amex Platinum card?

If you have the personal Amex Platinum card, you might not be able to get the Business Platinum Amex and its welcome offer.

If you already have the personal version of the card, it shouldn't affect your ability to apply for the business one.

Do you need a business to apply?

You may be wondering if you need your own business to apply for the Amex Business Platinum. Maybe the answer is not what you think.

Business cards are needed by independent contractors and people with a side hustle who want to separate their work and personal expenses. You don't need a formal business to have a small business card.

The Amex Business Platinum is a premium product from American Express. Amex won't approve anyone who has a side job. If you want to qualify, you need to demonstrate the income that your venture produces and provide information about it.

Can you get the card twice?

If you have a good financial history with Amex and have a business of your own, you can be pre-qualified for a second account. If you have more than one business, they may need a separate card for record-keeping.

If you work for more than one company, you may be targeted to apply for an additional Amex Business Platinum. If Amex contacts you with an offer, be sure to talk to a customer service representative to make sure you're eligible.

Call the reconsideration line

You might want to try your luck with the issuer's reconsideration line if you're rejected for the Amex Business Platinum. If you ring them up, you can ask if there were any issues with your application that you can address over the phone or provide further information.

You might be expected to explain why you need the Amex Business Platinum card, such as the benefits you find attractive. You could be asked to provide more information about your business, such as documentation of income, address and more.

If you are still denied, the good news is that you may be able to apply for the card in the future when it is offering another high introductory offer. That can be either silver or Platinum in this case.

Bottom line

The Amex Business Platinum is a great card for small businesses. One of it's highest-ever introductory offers is currently posted.
