Is Saudi Arabia's win vs. Argentina the biggest World Cup shock? (2:17)

Saudi Arabia defeated Argentina at the World Cup. There is a time and a place for it.

Lionel Messi's Argentina suffered one of the World Cup's greatest shocks as Saudi Arabia came from behind to win 2-1 at Lusail Stadium.

Messi gave Argentina a 10th-minute lead from the penalty spot with a coolly taken kick.

Two goals early in the second half, including an outstanding strike from Salem Al-Dawsari, turned the game on its head and left the Albiceleste with little margin for error against Mexico and Poland.

Argentina was the overwhelming favorite. They were on the verge of matching Italy's 37 match winning streak when they went ahead early on thanks to Messi's penalty, which came after a VAR check for pushing and shoving.

Messi beat Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais on a break, but that goal and two others by Lautaro were ruled out because of the high defensive line.

In the 48th minute, Al-Shehri squeezed in a low shot, and in the 53rd minute, Al-Dawsari curled in a strike from the edge of the penalty area, leaving Argentina dumbfounded.

Saudi Arabia, who had never previously won an opening game at a World Cup, were able to keep Argentina at bay despite plenty of possession after that.

The Argentina side, who have four players older than 34 in their starting XI, looked tired in the final 30 minutes after Al-Owais saved well at point-blank range.

Fans from Saudi Arabia chanted "Where is Messi?" They celebrated their lead as if they had beaten him.

The game was delayed after a nasty collision between Al-Owais and Yasser Al Shahrani that resulted in Al Shahrani leaving the pitch.
