Buying airline and hotel points is a great way to save money. You can save a lot of money on flights and hotel stays with this.

The best offers that are currently available are summarized in this post. I buy points all the time and I think it's important to know what's available.

There are nine deals on buying points from airlines and hotels.

  • Through November 22, 2022, Hilton Honors is offering up to a 100% bonus on purchased points / buy points for as little as 0.5 cents each / more info here

I linked to a post that talks about when it makes sense to not buy points from those programs, so you can check that out as well. It is not a good idea to assume that a 100% bonus in one program is a better deal than a 50% bonus in another program.

Air Canada Aeroplan, Alaska Mileage Plan, and Avianca LifeMiles are some of the best offers.

Which credit card should you buy points with?

Buying points with a credit card depends on the program you are using.

There are loyalty programs that process points purchases. You would want to use one of the following cards in those cases.

5x Membership Rewards points per dollar spent directly with airlines or through Amex Travel, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year and then 1x The Platinum Card® from American Express The Platinum Card® from American Express 3x Membership Rewards points per dollar spent directly with airlines American Express® Gold Card American Express® Gold Card 3x Membership Rewards points per dollar spent directly with airlines American Express® Green Card American Express® Green Card 3x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on airfare Chase Sapphire Reserve® Chase Sapphire Reserve® 3x ThankYou points per dollar spent on airfare Citi Premier® Card Citi Premier® Card 2x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on airfare Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Points purchases can be made at points.com. For points.com purchases, I would recommend using a credit card that maximizes your return on everyday spending, such as the Chase Freedom unlimited, or Capital One Double Cash card.

The Capital One Venture X has a lower foreign transaction fee than the other two cards.

Bottom line

When there is a lucrative promotion, buying airline points can be a great deal. It is worth knowing what is available if you would benefit from one of the year-end promotions. I usually only buy points if I have a short-term use in mind for a travel experience and know the math.

Have you taken advantage of any of the opportunities to buy points?
