There is a new speaker technology that uses a passport-sized vibrating panel. It was developed with a global audio company and is expected to be ready for car interiors next year.
The South Korean tech giant is promoting a replacement for traditional speaker systems within cars and other vehicles. Unlike current in-car speaker systems that use heavy components like voice coil, cones, and magnets, the Thin Actuator Sound solution uses film-type exciter technology to generate sound by vibrating off display panels and various materials within the vehicle.
The panel is very thick.
The panel is 2.5mm thick and 150mm wide and can be installed in unconventional places such as the dashboard, pillar, and headrests. The panel is just 30 percent of the weight and 10 percent of the thickness of a conventional car speaker.
While the technology itself isn't completely new, we haven't seen it adopted as a widespread replacement for traditional sound systems. We will get to see how the Thin Actuator Sound Solution performs in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
