Three hours before their World Cup opener against Iran, England announced that they wouldn't be wearing the OneLove armband.

The FA and Harry Kane wanted to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community by wearing an arm band.

Mark Bullingham, the CEO of the FA, said on Monday that England are looking at other ways to show their values.

The Football Associations of England, Wales, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, The Netherlands and Switzerland released a statement less than an hour later.

If our captains wear the flags on the field of play, they will be subject to sporting sanctions. As national federations, we can't put our players in a situation where they could face sporting sanctions including bookings, so we have asked the captains not to attempt to wear the armbands.

We were prepared to pay fines that would usually apply to breeches of kit regulations and had a strong commitment to wearing the armband. We can't force our players to leave the field of play if they are booked.

We wrote to FIFA in September to inform them of our wish to wear the One Love armband and had no response. Our players and coaches are disappointed, but they will support other ways.

It will look weak if you don't wear OneLove.

The threat of a yellow card will make it difficult for England to not wear the OneLove armband.

Jamie Carragher says it will be 'weak' for England to decide not to wear the OneLove armband because of the threat of a yellow card

Jamie Carragher said that England would look weak if they decided not to wear the OneLove armband.

On Sky Sports News' World Cup Breakfast before the U-turn, Carragher said that Harry Kane had to wear it.

"England have made a lot of noise about the fact that he is going to wear this, that this is their protest to the World Cup being inQatar, human rights and everything that goes on in the country that people have criticized."

This is England's way of showing that they don't agree with everything happening in the country.

They are not able to pull out now. It strengthens the campaign if Harry Kane gets a yellow card. If England pulled out because of a yellow card for Kane, I think it would make them more determined.
