Three people died over the weekend after contracting Covid, the first deaths from the virus in mainland China since May.

According to state media, there were three people who lived in Beijing who had pre-existing health conditions. The reports didn't say if they were vaccine free.

Beijing tightened Covid controls as the local case count increased to several hundred a day, including infections with and without symptoms.

Only take-out or delivery could be offered by restaurants in Beijing. At least one large shopping mall has temporarily closed.

Some of the capital city's schools have moved classes to the internet. Residents are not allowed to leave the locked down apartment communities.

Guangzhou is the capital city of the southern province of Guangdong. More than 8,000 Covid infections were reported by the province on Sunday.

Seven of the city's 11 districts will keep classes online, while one district can gradually resume in-person classes. Most of the schools in the eight districts moved their classes to the internet.

All 31 of the country's province-level regions have been affected by the latest wave of Covid infections. More than 25,000 Covid infections were reported by mainland China on Sunday.

Vaccination rates for Guangzhou's older population need to be improved according to officials. Chinese-made vaccines are the only ones currently available in the local area.

A senior health official said at a news conference that the vaccine rate for people over the age of 80 was lower than for the rest of the population.

In the U.S., more than 90 percent of people ages 75 and older have beenvaccinated, while in Singapore at least 90 percent of people who are 80 years old have beenvaccinated, according to official data.

Just over a week ago, Chinese authorities announced that they would reduce the time it takes for people to enter and exit the country. The country has a strict zero- Covid policy and the rest of the world has shifted to a live with Covid strategy.
