Hooker tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season.

Hooker was hurt in the fourth quarter and team officials feared the worst.

For the majority of the season, Hooker was one of the favorites to win the award. He had a non-contact injury when he rolled left on an option play and his leg got stuck in the grass. The Hooker went to the ground after losing control of the ball. The training staff helped him to the locker room after he was helped off the field.

After transferring from Virginia Tech, Hooker was a driving force in Tennessee's revival under second-year coach Josh Heupel. This season, he passed for 3,135 yards and 27 touchdown. He leads the SEC with an average of 324.1 yards per game.

In his first season at Tennessee, Hooker won the starting job in Week 3 and went on to finish with 2,945 passing yards and 31 touchdown. He had nine touchdown runs.

According to Heupel, Hooker was playing as well as any quarterback he'd ever seen.

Heupel said it's fun to watch how everyone else rallies around him. It's his attention to detail, his work ethic and competitive spirit that make him so special. They are going to remember him for a long time.

In the first College Football Playoff rankings, Hooker was the leader of the Tennessee team. The Vols lost on the road to Georgia and then at home to the South Carolina.

Joe Milton III will start at quarterback for Tennessee on Saturday. In the final minutes of the game, Hooker was injured and was replaced by Milton, who threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to a teammate.
