One of New Mexico State's student athletes is in the hospital after an altercation at the University of New Mexico. A 21-year-old man is in stable condition after being wounded in a gunfight.
The New Mexico student was declared dead at the scene. There was a gunfight outside a dorm on the campus. The two men had an altercation that led to an exchange of gunfire that was being investigated as a murder. They didn't know how and why they crossed paths.
One person has died following that altercation. Arvizu wrote in a letter to students, parents, employees, alumni and fans that some of the athletics personnel stayed in Albuquerque to be with the student athlete. New Mexico State personnel have been in contact with investigators.
The Aggies men's basketball team had been scheduled to play the Lobos in Albuquerque on Saturday, but the game was canceled due to the shooting.
It's important that no one rush to judgement until all the facts are available, and that's what the chancellor said.
A source told Myron Medcalf that no members of the New Mexico basketball team were involved in the shooting.
The name of the student who died was not being released until relatives could be contacted, and police were looking for witnesses to the altercation.
Officer Ray Wilson, a New Mexico State Police spokesman, said officers stopped the team bus "as part of the ongoing investigation into the homicide" as it headed back to Las Cruces. No one aboard the bus was being held.
