Scientists say major eruptions could be on the way because of the volcanic activity on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

The peninsula, which extends into the Pacific Ocean east of Moscow, is one of the world's most active areas of volcanic activity.

News reports said there was a big earthquake on Saturday.

As many as 10 explosions an hour were being recorded at the tallest active volcano in the world, according to the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Ash emissions and lava flows are coming from the volcano.

There is not a lot of people in Kamchatka. The town of Klyuchi is located between the two volcanoes and has a population of 5000.

The only major city on the peninsula is Petro Pavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
