I reviewed the food and atmosphere from both Denny's and IHOP. I ordered a variety of breakfast foods from both chains. I preferred IHOP more than the other restaurants. Denny's and IHOP serve breakfast. Denny's and IHOP have great breakfast spreads. Danny's Donuts was the first Denny's location in California. Both chains are well-known for their large variety of pancakes. I wanted to know which one offered the better meal. I ordered the same plate of food from all the different chains and reviewed the meal's quality and value, as well as the restaurant's atmosphere. Denny's was my first stop. A Denny's is located on a busy street near my house. Denny's are usually found near freeways, so this was one of them in the city. The parking was easy. There was a bench to sit on in the lobby. On a weekday, there were barely any people there. I was sitting at a booth. I liked how big the booth was and how comfortable the seats were. There were several pads of butter and a bottle of Ketchup at the table. Denny's has a retro vibe. I was unsure if the jukebox was just for decoration or not. The restaurant was pretty quiet with the music playing on a low level.
The chain has a signature breakfast.
You can make your own breakfast platter for $13.19.
I ordered a variety of food and drinks, including coffee.
I got my coffee first.
The coffee was in a saucer with half- and-half cups.
It tasted a bit dull and watered down, but it was similar to a diner roast, so I couldn't complain.
A mug of coffee is comforting.
Within 11 minutes, I received my food.
I was not expecting the presentation to blow me away.
There was a huge pile of scrambled eggs on the main plate and two pieces of bacon on the side.
I appreciated that the pancakes were served on a separate plate since I don't like syrup on my eggs.
Denny's eggs tasted good.
I thought I had about three eggs worth of scramble on my plate.
The scramble was soft and fluffy. It tasted great even though it didn't have a lot of salt.
Eggs were elevated by a few shakes of salt and pepper.
The food looked great, but it tasted okay.
There was an extra-crispy, slightly darker exterior to the shredded hash browns that were fried to golden brown. I don't mind that since I love potatoes.
The potatoes tasted good. They were bland, but I added some seasonings to make them better.
Some of the potatoes clumped together.
The bacon let me down.
The bacon pieces should be bigger.
Even though they were not very strong, they were still very hard to hit. I didn't like the taste.
I thought this bacon would work well on a sandwich, but it didn't.
Denny's pancakes were the main highlight.
The short stack consisted of two pancakes with a homestyle feel.
They were really good. They were kept from tasting overly sweet by the salted butter and it added a silky sensation that soaked into every hole.
I was able to control how much I added to my pancakes after the server brought me a bottle of syrup. The topping was simple and sweet.
The pancakes were moist and fluffy and had a good chew.
I had plenty of leftover food from this. The waiter took the time to bring me a box.
I then ate at a restaurant.
IHOP is a short drive away from my house. There was a strip mall with several other restaurants.
The chain was a special treat when I was a child because there were so few nearby.
The location wasn't crowded and the host welcomed me right away. There was a lot of room to sit in the foyer and front of the restaurant.
Denny's felt like a diner, but IHOP felt like a restaurant.
I sat at a small booth in the center of the restaurant.
There were pictures of pancakes on the walls that advertised different specials.
It felt more like a sit down restaurant than a diner.
I was able to hear the conversations at the other booths because this IHOP was so quiet.
The combo was ordered by me.
IHOP's menu is best known for its wide range of pancake options, but the chain also has a good selection of breakfast combinations that give you more bang for your buck.
I ordered a spread of pancakes with your choice of meat, eggs, and hash browns. I chose to eat scrambled eggs and bacon again.
A regular coffee was ordered by me as well.
The coffee came quickly with a saucer.
IHOP gave me non-dairy creamers, unlike Denny's, which only gave half-and-half. I think this was a nice touch, even though I am not a dairy-free person.
The coffee tasted good and I preferred the previous option.
The food arrived quicker than expected.
A medium-sized plate was used to serve the food.
The food and plate were the same size, so there was not much room for pouring syrup without making a mess.
I didn't get as much food as I did at Denny's, but there was still enough to make this a good value.
I didn't think IHOP's scrambled eggs were good.
I received less eggs than I anticipated.
They had a light brown crust on the edges.
The hash browns were unforgettable.
The shredded potatoes were delicious.
They made up for it with their delicious flavor.
I put hot sauce or Ketchup on my potatoes to make them better.
The bacon from IHOP was pretty good.
The texture was larger than expected, which made it more chewier.
The flavor was very salty and smokey. It had a different taste than Denny's.
I enjoyed dipping the bacon in the syrup and eating it.
These pancakes made IHOP famous.
When I was a kid, I usually went to IHOP to get chocolate-chip pancakes. I've never eaten plain ones from the chain.
These were less dense than Denny's pancakes. They were a little floppier and less structured because they had less weight.
I put a corner of my short stack with regular syrup on the table. The top ran out of the bottle quickly because the pour spout was wider.
The International House of Pancakes is a chain of pancake restaurants. The highlights of the meal were these.
Each bite melted in my mouth because of the texture. It wasn't quite as fluffy as I'm used to from diners, but it was still lovely.
These pancakes were delicious, even though they got a bit soggy from the syrup.
It was difficult to pick a winner because both chains had strengths.
Denny's eggs were better than IHOP's bacon. The former's potatoes weren't as crisp as the other chain's, but they were still more delicious.
I was surprised that Denny's short stack gave the pancake house a run for its money.
I had leftovers from my IHOP platter, even though Denny's meal was more bang for my buck.
Both restaurants were pleasant to visit. The atmospheres were similar.
IHOP was more expensive than Denny's, but I could taste a difference in the quality of some of the ingredients, which gave the chain a leg up.
