Ecuador players celebrate Enner Valencia's (centre-right) goal against Qatar
Valencia (centre-right) spent three years at West Ham between 2014-2017 - including a loan spell at Everton - before moving to Mexican side Tigres UANL

In the opening game of the World Cup, hosts Qatar were beaten by a score of calamitous proportions.

Felixnchez's men have been together in camp for the last six months to prepare for the tournament and work on tactics, but a nervous and confused performance led to a Group A loss.

The game looked like it would be easy for Qatar, but they dominated from start to finish.

The video assistant referee ruled out Enner Valencia's goal for being in an area where he shouldn't have been, but the South Americans broke the stalemate shortly afterwards.

Valencia converted the spot- kick after Al Sheeb brought him down in the box.

The Al Bayt Stadium was silenced at the half as Valencia scored his second goal of the game.

The ground was half empty for much of the second period because many supporters who had left at the interval didn't come back.

Romario Ibarra's curling shot was pushed out by Al-Sheeb as the atmosphere on the pitch was flat.

The side were unable to get a shot on target after star men Almoez Ali and Hassan Al Haydos were both taken out of the game.

Qatar's dream turns to nightmare

Twelve years after being named as the host of the World Cup, a football was kicked.

They became the first hosts in the competition's history to lose their opening game when they hosted the event.

The Asian champion offered no threat in the final third and couldn't test Hernan Galindez once.

South Africa is the only one of the hosts not to make it out of the group.

In their last seven games, Ecuador have kept a clean sheet and have only lost one game.

They had the ball in the back of the net after 160 seconds, but Valencia's close range effort was ruled out by the VAR.

There was confusion as to why the goal didn't stand, but Felix Torres' initial challenge with the goalkeeper fell to the other side of the net.

Valencia rolled in the penalty after Al Sheeb brought down his shaky counterpart.

The first shot came in anger when defender Abdelkarim Hassan tried to get the ball but his attempt was not successful.

Ali, who scored nine goals in the Asian Cup, struggled to get into the game and headed wide, while Pedro Miguel did the same in the second half.

With most of the crowd already leaving to go home, substitute Mohammed Muntari and substitute Akram Afif both smashed over to bring an end to a disappointing opening night for the hosts.
