It's still under construction and it's like hell during the day. The desert is too hot.

Shogo Nakashima has a smile on his face as he gives a critical review of his home. "If I don't laugh, I might cry".

He said he had to accept it and wait for the Japan match. I will only be here to sleep. I want to explore the city and not stay here.

One of the first people to arrive at Qetaifan Island Fan Village is a Japanese man who arrived just a few hours after the venue opened.

There are indications that things may not go as planned.

Heavy machinery can be seen on the drive towards the campsite. Workmen are busy with jobs that range from laying pavement stones to wiring lights, as construction cranes reach high into the sky.

The 'premium fan camp' tag on the site's official booking page doesn't match the perimeter fence of the reception area.

Each tent can hold two people.

Pedro and Fatima are cheering for Mexico. This trip is part of their honeymoon after they were married.

The cost is about $175 a night. It wasn't what I thought it would be. Pedro said that when he saw the pictures and read the description, he expected a bit of quality.

Backpackers can find a sub-par hostel in this area.

He said that they weren't able to sleep past 9 am because they were exhausted from the flight.

Two single beds and a nightstand are contained in the tents. There is a thin layer of carpet on the ground. There is an electric fan in the room.

Fatima said there was no organization and no one knew anything.

There is no drinking water. This is not what we spent money on.

Everyone we talk to has the same thought.

For some people the situation needs to be more drastic. After less than a day at the fan village, Djamal is packing his bags and leaving.

I don't think it is a good experience for me. He said there wasn't a shower gel, toothbrush, or toothpaste.

He shared with us the fact that he thought he was going to a hotel.

The staff here are friendly and always smiling. If they gave conflicting information, like where and when water could be purchased, a wristband would be needed.

The beach club fan park is close to the fan village. There is a large screen that shows matches and where alcohol will be sold. It was recently announced that it would be banned in stadiums.

There are signs that the beach club won't be finished in time for the kick off. There is a lot of construction material scattered around the site, and there is a lot of metal being clanged as structures are built.

The staff here are quietly confident that the fan park will be ready, given all that. Even if how they have been carried out can be questioned, their ambitious plans can't be.

The country was awarded football's biggest competition in 2010 so any sudden rush to be ready does not bode well for fans who have traveled halfway across the world.
