Deion Sanders is in his third year as the head coach of the program. The year before he arrived, the team went 4-7.

They improved to 11-2 with a SWAC title in 2021. South Carolina State defeated the tigers in the celebration bowl.

The quarterback of Jackson State's team is his son, Shedeur. The running back surpassed the 1,000 yard mark. The team's leader was Aubrey Miller Jr. The team is well-deserving of its 10 spot in the Division I-FCS poll.

The winner of the SWAC conference title will play the winner of the MEAC title in the Celebration Bowl.
