Some of his former colleagues haven't picked up on the fact that the American people have moved past Donald Trump.

After former President Donald Trump launched his bid for the presidency, a former congressman made comments about it.

Rooney said on "Meet the Press Now" that there are a number of very conservative Republicans who don't seem to have figured out how to vote. I would not be for him.

Rooney said it wasn't encouraging. While Trump buried us with these elections, so many people are still currying favor and hiding under Trump's penumbra, and I don't see the value of that.

After several of Trump's hand-selected candidates lost their races, Republican leaders have held back from endorsing him immediately, a stark contrast to previous elections. The summer or fall of the year prior to an election is when potential candidates who may rival Trump in the race for the presidency are most likely to announce their candidacy.

Rooney said Americans care more about kitchen table issues than about the past.

Rooney said he thought they wanted stability. The American people don't want to go back in time.

Rooney, who was one of the first Republicans to suggest that Trump may have committed impeachable offenses, will retire in 2019.

Rooney said on NBC that there were some people who were not happy with him being the first Republican to break away from Trump.

Some members of Congress claim to their congressional seats, which is why they haven't severed ties with Trump.

"A lot of these guys, it's the best job they'll ever get, and they cling like a barnacle to a piling to hold onto it instead of trying to serve the people and do the best for our country." No one wanted to serve that long anyways, so the forefathers didn't think term limits were necessary.
