Chase Young is going to have to wait another week to come back.
He won't play at Houston on Sunday because Washington didn't put him on the 53-man roster.
Ron Rivera said Friday that he will be activated before wednesday.
Young was placed on the physically unable to perform list at the beginning of the season. Washington has 21 days to either put him on injured reserve or activated.
Young tore his right knee in November of last year and had to have his left knee repaired.
Trainers told Rivera that Young's knee is fine, but he needs to regain confidence in his right leg.
Rivera said there was nothing else the strength conditioning guys could do for him. It's about football now. How comfortable he is, how confident he is, how good he is at football. Everyone else is going to get fired up because he's going to run around 19-20 mph on the gps and you're going to feel good. You're trying to hold the point when you're pushing more than 300 pounds. That is not the same thing. It's not possible to mimic that during your rehabilitation program. This is a crucial time for us.
If Young shows them what they want to see, they may wait another week or two.
Young was the defensive rookies of the year in 2020 when he recorded 7.5 sacks, four forced turnovers and three fumble recoveries. He had 1.5 sacks a year ago.
Multiple reports say the Commanders are placing running back J.D. McKissic on injured reserve because of a neck injury.
The running back had 95 rushing yards and 173 receiving yards.
