Does Berhalter think the USMNT has a World Cup winning squad? (3:10)

Two days before the World Cup opener, the USMNT coach sat down with Sam. 3 minutes ago

Eight years ago, Klinsmann said it was impossible for the US to win the World Cup. He said it to me in an interview for The New York Times Magazine a few months before the tournament, and then in a news conference just before the USMNT's opener. Many American fans and some of Klinsmann's own players were troubled by what felt like a defeatist attitude.

The same question was posed to the U.S. team's head coach in an interview on Saturday. He smiled after pausing for a moment.

He believes that we can beat anyone in the world. anyone

Berhalter wants his young team to believe that the only way to make history is if they believe they can. Berhalter organized a team meeting in which motivational speaker Eric Thomas talked to the players about the power of belief.

Berhalter didn't hesitate when asked how many pairs of shoes he had brought with him to the USMNT's first match against Wales.

It's a great honor to play in the World Cup, but we don't want to just be in it. We would like to perform.

Berhalter is not predicting the U.S. will be a champion. He's focused on the idea that success doesn't always come without conviction. Berhalter learned that as an international player and is now a manager.

This is the biggest stage Berhalter has been a part of. Four years ago, he was charged with restoring the U.S. to respectability after the debacle of the qualification cycle. He oversaw the transformation of the U.S. team, which included the recruitment of star-level dual nationals like Timothy Weah and Yunus Musah.

Berhalter would like to get more. Over the past week, he and his coaching staff have pushed each other to think of every possible scenario they could face in one of the group stage matches.

Berhalter is known for his bent towards data and analytics, and he is determined to prepare for any direction a game might take.

If the US is up a goal, what will they do? Are you saying you're down a goal? Do you mean down two? Is it possible to up a man? Do you mean down a man? How will they deal with a player getting hurt? The opposing star might go down early. There is a plan for all of them. What is the most concerning scenario for him? He hasn't thought of it yet.

Sergino Dest might not be fit for the USMNT opener against Wales.

He said that they had the time for the last few months. If you're not prepared, it hurts decision-making when you're on the field.

There will be challenges. First-choice players are out because of injuries. Three Group B opponents with significant experience are England, Wales, and Iran. There are no matches in which the US is favored.

There is determination as well. Fans from the U.S. will support the team in the tournament. Millions more will watch and hope to return to the US. There will be a mix of youthfulness and plucking which can lead to naive performances but can also turn into magic.

Berhalter is supposed to be the leader. To encourage. He wanted his players to find their best self when it mattered most. Monday is the beginning of the journey. Berhalter isn't sure where it will end.

Getting out of the group is the first step. The second step is to play our best game and see how far we can go.
