Every bit of progress is tentative without a reference image. The red corner should be in the center of the picture. Is it going to be horizontal or vertical? Does this piece fit right here or is it not? There is a stab in the dark. The pieces are in a haystack that doesn't make sense.

Even if some pieces are missing or not put together exactly how they should be, the big- picture QR code should still work. I don't know if any of the pieces are where they need to be. The edges are not included. I don't think I was joking. I'm motivated by spite as much as the potential winnings, and that's why I'm determined to solve this puzzle.

At least 10 family members, my best friend, my partner, one boisterous Boston terrier, and varying degrees of determination have been my backup. It's become a ritual for me and my loved ones worth more than a million dollars to spend time together. This puzzle is one of my favorites of the year. The first puzzle is almost solved. February 24th is when the sweepstakes ends. If I said I wasn't worried about finishing in time, I would be lying.

There is a big picture.

It isn't impossible despite the fact that this puzzle may be annoying. Some people have solved it. It can be solved by us. There have been many pep talks. My mom says we have to be smarter than the puzzle. Correct, we are smarter than the puzzle.

The puzzle was in the center of my parents' living room. I was going to put a piece or two into place when I came over. Kids would come out of their bedrooms to grab a snack and look for a missing section. Small talk led to hours of conversations around a table, looking at a sea of blue with little black dots, trying to figure out how the pieces fit My 9-year-old sister was called a "psychopath" by me. My mom wondered what kind of person would move from place to place. She didn't ask if a child is a psychopath.

When we got a corner solved, we were laughing about what we would buy with our winnings. My brother said he would buy the lake house of my dreams, and invite everyone else over. Poor overhead lighting was a curse. We swore we would only work on it for a short time after checking the time and seeing it was 3 am.

During a difficult time in our lives, this puzzle gave my family something to think about. During the last few days of my grandmother's life, she couldn't respond, but the nurses said she could hear us. It's easy in the movies, but filling a room for a long period of time is difficult. There are only so many things you can say and do. We didn't know what to do or say.
