Donald Trump made a declaration that he is one of the most honest and innocent people and suggested that any new indictment could be double jeopardy.
CNN senior justice correspondent Evan Pérez said after listening to Trump that he was just making it up.
Attorney General Garland named a special counsel Friday to oversee the Justice Department's investigation into classified documents stashed at Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence that had been transported there from the White House.
Jack Smith, a former Justice Department official, will supervise the investigation into Trump's role in the Jan. 6 insurrection and attempts to toss out the results of the presidential election.
The decision to appoint a special counsel, the Biden administration, and the Department of Justice were all described by Trump asappalling. He referred to Smith as a radical left-winger.
Trump said that he can't be indicted for anything because he's one of the most honest and innocent people in the country.
Trump suggested that any indictment against him could be considered double jeopardy since he was cleared in two impeachments. He wondered if that was double jeopardy.
Geraldo Rivera had said the same thing earlier in the day.
Double jeopardy doesn't apply to impeachments
The investigation into the White House classified documents that Trump had stashed at Mar-a-Lago was dying or over, he said.
Pérez told John Berman that the former president was making it up.
There is no reason to think that this was a dead investigation or that it was being abandoned. Pérez said it's far from it. The people around him have been getting subpoenas. There was no indication that this was going to end.
Berman said that a lot of what he was saying was misleading.
Earlier in the day, a furious Trump told Fox News that he wouldn't participate in any investigation conducted by the special counsel.
