Special counsel was appointed by the Attorney General to investigate the handling of classified documents by former President Donald Trump.

Jack Smith was appointed by Garland as the chief prosecutor for the special court in The Hague charged with investigating war crimes in Kosovo. Smith was the head of the Justice Department's public integrity section, which dealt with corruption and election-related crimes.

The investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election will be presided over by Smith.

"Based on recent developments, including the former president's announcement that he is a candidate for president in the next election, and the sitting president's stated intention to be a candidate as well, I have concluded that it is in the public's interest to appoint a special counsel,"

He became the acting US attorney in Nashville after serving as a top federal prosecutor.

Immediately, he begins his term as special counsel.
