Archaeologists have found a tunnel underneath a temple in the ruined city of Taposiris Magna on the Egyptian coast.

The structure was found 13 meters below the ground during ongoing excavations and exploration of the temple. The tunnel was hewn through 1,305 meters of sandstone, making it the tallest tunnel in the world.

The design of the tunnel is very similar to the one on the island of Samos. The conduit was considered a marvel of engineering in its day.

The engineering of the Taposiris Magna tunnel is as good as it gets.

The tunnel resembles another, older tunnel from ancient Greece that was used to transport water. (Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities)

The Taposiris Magna tunnel has a resemblance to the Eupalinos tunnel, but it's not known what its purpose is.

The tunnel is believed to be a promising lead in the search for the tomb of Cleopatra VII. The last of the Ptolemies and the famous queen are thought to have been found previously.

Ptolemy II, the son of Alexander the Great's renowned general and one of Cleopatra's forebears, founded Taposiris Magna in the year 280 BC. The team believes that the temple was dedicated to Osiris and Isis, the god and queen of Osiris and Isis. There are coins with the names and likenesses of Alexander the Great and Cleopatra found there.

It's too early to say if the new tunnel will lead to the long lost tombs.

The Mediterranean sea will be explored next. A series of earthquakes caused part of the temple to collapse and be swallowed by the waves. There are tunnels stretching from Lake Mariout to the Mediterranean.

Alabaster heads were also found at the temple site. (Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities)

A thorough excavation of the ruins could show us more about the city. Pieces of pottery and a block of limestone were found in the tunnel.

The most important discovery of the 21st century would be the tomb of Cleopatra and Mark Antony. We made major discoveries if we did not find the tomb of Cleopatra and Mark Antony.
