USA Basketball is not the top ranked men's basketball team for the first time in a dozen years.
Spain moved into the top spot, edging the U.S. in the process, as the sport's governing body updated its rankings.
After winning the world championship in 2010, the Americans moved into the top spot.
"It's not a new title and it probably can't be maintained for too long, but it's something so unique, prestigious and historic that I feel tremendously proud of everyone who contributed to it," said Spain's coach.
The results from the most recent eight years were taken into account when changing the rankings. The U.S. is no longer reaping the benefits of the World Cup title but is still seeing the Olympic gold medals won. At the World Cup, the U.S. finished 7th.
The EuroBasket title was won by Spain. Spain has won four in a row at the continental championship, all under Scariolo.
Spain leads the US men by just 1.1 points.
There were no changes in the next 10 places. Argentina was the top ranked country prior to the U.S. taking that spot in 2010.
The United States is still the top ranked team in women's basketball. The United States won the gold medal at the women's World Cup this year.
The world's boys' and girls' basketball rankings are held by USA Basketball.
Men's and women's national teams from different countries are included in the most recent rankings.
