After Republicans secured 218 seats needed for House control, Pelosi said she would step back from her leadership position. Her decision came nearly a month after her husband was attacked with a hammer by a man at their home in San Francisco. When the GOP took control of the House in 2015, Pelosi returned to her speaker role after serving as Minority Leader for a couple of years. She is the most accomplished Speaker in American history according to Jeffries. Kevin McCarthy is expected to be the next House Speaker after winning his party's nomination.

Despite recent polling indicating a Republican "red wave" would give the GOP control of both chambers of Congress, Democrats kept control of the Senate.
