As the "hardcore" stay-or-go deadline passed on Thursday, employees of the social media company flooded internal channels with farewell messages.

Musk sent a late-night email to employees telling them to commit to his vision or be laid off. There was a button in the email that staff could click if they wanted to stay at the company. Thursday is the last day of the week.

"I'm not pressing the button, I'm going somewhere else," one departing staff member said in a message. My watch ends with a new social networking site. I don't want to be a part of the new social networking site.

"Social watercooler" was flooded with salute emojis, the company shorthand for saying goodbye to coworkers.

One employee said in a message that he had met many friends here. Will remember the good times attwtr.

Insider reported that less than half of the remaining staff had committed to Musk's "hardcore" vision for "Twitter 2.0" after the deadline.

One employee said in a message that he has been at the company for over a decade. I was the 27th most tenured employee back in July. The 15th is me.

The staff who appeared not to have committed to Musk's vision posted salutes on the site.

They didn't reply to Insider's request.

During Musk's mass layoffs on November 4, former employees used the salute emojis as they were laid off.
