A former top aide to Senate Minority LeaderMitch McConnell was found guilty of helping a Russian citizen funnel a political donation to former President Donald Trump. A ticket to a September 2016 Republican National Committee event for Donald Trump was given to a Russian multilevel marketer by a 44-year old man. Vasilenko gave a large amount of money.

The values and priorities of American citizens are reflected in elections, according to an assistant US attorney. The principles were damaged by Jesse Benton's actions.

There are two convictions for campaign finance violations by this man. He was found guilty of facilitating the transfer of $73,000 to an Iowa state senator in exchange for endorsing Ron Paul during his 2012 presidential campaign. The president pardoned Benton in December 2020.

The Wead brothers were indicted by prosecutors in September of 2021. Wead was accused of connecting Vasilenko to Benton.

During the trial, Brian Stolarz argued that Vasilenko was just a self-promoter willing to pay to get photos of himself with celebrities, and he and Wead settled on Trump after looking into photo ops with Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Sea and others. He said in his closing argument that we wouldn't be here if Oprah was available. Stolarz said Vasilenko was interested in a photo with the guy who used to be on The Apprentice, not a future president.

The idea that Vasilenko wasn't interested in Trump's politics was disputed by prosecutors who said his photo with Trump helped get him on Russian television. They said that he should have known that he was breaking federal campaign finance laws.
