The news was first reported on Giant Freaking Robot. The original star of the show, Kurt Russell, is not mentioned in the reports. Russell is not attached to the film, at least right now, according to a story on a site called Bloody Disgusting. John Carpenter is working on a project. It's obvious that he is.
There is no word on what angle this remake will take. If it doesn't happen at all, this project is a long way off. Multiple filmmakers have been attached or rumored to be interested in remaking the film after Fox got the rights to the franchise. It is almost as if it is a film that should not be re-made.
"Kurt Russell is the product of one brain and how are you going to replace him?" writerLeigh Whannell told io9 back in 2020. I am afraid of it and I want to approach it cautiously. I would have to know how I was going to please the fans of the original in order to do anything.
That is just one mans opinion. Radio Silence took a franchise that fans thought was dead in Scream and brought it back for two more films. It might get over the wall and come out with the hostage.
