Paul Goldschmidt beat out teammate Nolan Arenado and the San Diego Padres third baseman to win the National League's Most Valuable Player award.
Goldschmidt received 22 of 30 first-place votes and eight seconds for 400 points from a Baseball Writers' Association of America panel to win the Most Valuable Player award. Arenado had one first-place vote and was third with 231 points.
It is the sixth time in 12 years that Goldschmidt has finished in the top six in voting for the award. He is the first 35-year-old to win a career Most Valuable Player since Dennis Eckersley.
Goldschmidt had the highest OPS-plus (180) of his career, while leading the NL in batting (.578) and batting average (.971). He was part of the team that led the NL Central Division.
He ranked third in the NL in batting average and fifth in home runs, with a.317 batting average and 35 home runs for the year. Goldschmidt ranked first in WOBA, first inWRC+, and third in ISO in his sabermetrics. He was the second ranked position player in WAR.
In the first five months of the season, Goldschmidt hit.332 with anOPS over 1.000, which was enough to make him the Most Valuable Player. He hit just.235 in September with two homers. He went 0-for-7 in the wild card game.

In voting for the fifth time in his career, Arenado finished in the top six after hitting.293 with 30 homers. He won his 10th gold glove award.
