The Freeform app is available for both iPadOS 16.2 and Apple's mobile device operating system. Freeform is a blank canvas that can be used for many things.

There are a number of tools that you can use with the Freeform app on the iPad.

Shapes

There are hundreds of pre-designed "clip art" shapes that are available in Freeform, across the following categories: basic, geometry, objects, animals, food, nature, symbols, education, arts, science, people, places, activities, transportation, work, and ornaments.

You can stack multiple shapes on top of one another, change the color, draw over them, rearrange them, break the component pieces apart, and more. There are many ways to work with shapes.

Images, Scans, and Documents

All sorts of documents are supported by the Freeform app. In the Photos app, you can add photos and videos directly from your Camera Roll.

Photos and videos that you add to your project can be enlarged with drag and drop gestures, viewed in full, and layers with other images.

You can use the iPad's camera in either black and white or color to take pictures, add documents from iCloud Drive, or add a link from the browser. Links and files are shown in little card-like tiles and can be rearranged on the canvas with drag and drop gestures and layers of files for a visual look at your documents.

Stickies

You can add Stickies with the Freeform app. The Stickies are similar to the Stickies app for Mac. You can change the color of Stickies by selecting one of seven colors.

If you use typed text on an iPad, you can use an Apple Pencil to write on one of the Stickies, but you can also use a variety of different styles of writing.

Text Insertion

Any typed text can be put on the Freeform canvas. Text can be as long or as short as you want, and all of the standard formatting options are available for changing.

Freeform has the same set of drawing tools that you're used to using. You can use the Apple Pencil to draw on the iPad or the iPhone. All of the pens, markers, and crayons have a variety of colors and line thicknesses.

You can also use a fill tool to fill in lines that you draw.

Colors

Freeform has a lot of colors. You can pick a simple color from a grid, choose a color from a spectrum interface, use sliders, or type in color codes manually. Favorite colors can be saved to the bottom of the interface.

Any color on the canvas can be matched with an eyedropper tool.

Object Movement

Any object in a Freeform document can be quickly rearranged. There are no true layers to work with when sending an object to the "back" or the "front" from tapping.

If you want to change one dimensions and not another, objects can be locked in place, duplicated, or constrained in proportion.

File Management

Freeform boards can be saved as a PDF document or printed out and can also be saved to apps. Links to boards can be shared via email, text, and other means.

Multiple Boards

Multiple Freeform boards, which can be viewed as icons or a list, can be sorted by name or date. There are groups that can be used to organize a large number of boards.

Collaboration

You can share Freeform boards with other iPhone and iPad users. All Freeform board participants are able to work on the same board.

Changes to Freeform boards are synchronized for all users in real time.

Availability and Device Compatibility

The Freeform app can be found on the iPad and Mac. It requires all three operating systems to work, but it is not available on devices that can't run these updates.
