House Republicans vowed Thursday to make their investigation of Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings a "top priority" next year, and set up a battle with the White House the day after Republicans won the House majority.
James Comer, who is slated to chair the House Oversight and Reform Committee next year, said Republicans have uncovered evidence that shows the president used his public positions to further his family's financial interests.
"To be clear, Joe Biden is the big guy," he said at a news conference flanked by other Republican lawmakers, repeating a term Republicans claim was used to refer to the president.
There is a lot of evidence that the committee has uncovered from Hunter Biden's laptop and from other sources, including documents that show Biden was a partner in his family's business dealings.
The committee has information that could lead to federal charges against members of the Biden family, including conspiracy to defraud the United States.
The Treasury Department is in possession of at least 150 suspicious activity reports related to the Biden family, according to a report issued by the committee.
The committee published a copy of a SAR that says Hunter Biden paid an adult entertainer who has been listed in prior filings for "transactions consistent with possible human trafficking"
The White House accused Republicans of wasting time on politically-motivated attacks and long-debunked conspiracy theories.
Hunter Biden has been subject to a number of investigations into his business dealings but no criminal charges have been brought. The New York Post reported before the election that Hunter Biden tried to use his father's influence as vice president to benefit himself. Some of the information on the laptop has been verified by the New York Times and Washington Post. The son of the president is being investigated by the U.S. Attorney for Delaware for possible tax fraud violations related to his business activities in China. According to reports released by the Senate Homeland Security and Finance Committees, Hunter Biden's position on the board of Burisma could have presented conflicts of interest to the United States. Hunter Biden paid people who appeared to be linked to an Eastern European prostitution ring.
The probe is one of many that will be launched by the new Congress. The New York Times reported that the incoming Republican leadership agreed to investigate the handling of the January 6 rioters. The U.S. withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan is on the investigatory docket.
According to CNN, the White House has assembled a team of lawyers to help it prepare for the onslaught of investigations. The Democratic National Committee published a memo calling him a "conspiracy theorist, Trump sycophant and proven liar" as he made his announcement.
Hunter Biden is the subject of a tax probe by prosecutors.
