Musk added a warning to managers who are now held responsible for reporting employee performance.

In back-to-back emails seen by Insider, Musk further clarified his stance around remote work amid mass confusion within the company about how a new mandate would be implemented. Under the "work from anywhere" policy, employees are allowed to work from home full-time if they choose. In his first email to staff, Musk said that only exceptional employees would be allowed to work from home and that he would sign off on exceptions.

Musk made it clear on Thursday what is needed to get such an exception.

Musk wrote in his first email that "all that is required for approval is that your manager takes responsibility for ensuring that you are making an excellent contribution" It is expected that you have in person meetings with your colleagues at least once a month.

Musk followed up on that email with a tougher stance that's come to be expected of his leadership style. Managers themselves will be fired if they try and keep members of their team who aren't performing well.

Musk wrote that any manager who makes a false claim that someone reporting to them is doing excellent work or that a given role is essential will be out of the company.

Just a few hours before the deadline, Musk gave a deadline to all remaining workers. He told employees who were laid off two weeks ago that they needed to sign up before 5 pm Thursday to be considered for a job. Those who don't sign up will be considered to have quit the company.

Two current employees told Insider that many employees have signed up to work for Musk if they click the link. Hundreds of others have not, leaving some team managers wondering how they may be able to keep operations going after another wave of departures. Managers lobbying on behalf of team members who don't work out of an office or who are out of state is one of the reasons why Musk is no longer using remote work.

One employee said it was stressing them out. There are a lot of people I need to hear from.
