New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport is on its way to being a reality.
Kathy Hochul, along with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the region's major airports, announced on Thursday that the new Terminal 6 project at JFK has secured the necessary funding.
The agency secured funding for the first phase of the new terminal from four private companies.

The lease for the new Terminal 6 was approved last year, but the agency hadn't finalized funding for the new construction. The lease has been signed and construction is expected to start early next year.
The first phase is expected to open in the year of 2020.
"This will be a state-of-the-art, truly extraordinary facility, and at all three airports, the Port Authority is committed to 21st century quality, state-of-the-art airports for the region," said Rick Cotton, the executive director of the Port Authority,
The north side of the airport will be home to the new Terminal 6. Nine of the gates will be able to handle wide-body aircraft.
Terminal 6 will be connected to Terminal 5. JFK operations will not be affected by the construction as it will be contained to an area used for aircraft parking.

The existing Terminal 7 will be torn down when Terminal 6 is finished. British Airways, the current anchor tenant in Terminal 7, is moving to American's Terminal 8 later this year, while the other airlines in the existing Terminal 7 are expected to move to other terminals in the future.
A bright-and-airy arrivals and departures hall with floor-to-ceiling windows, a robust public art program, automated security lanes, and over 100,000 square feet of space dedicated to shopping and dining are some of the improvements teased by the Port Authority.
The Lufthansa Group will be moving to Terminal 6 once it opens. Out of Terminal 1 there are flights operated by Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines and Belgian Airlines.
The Port Authority is teasing a world-class lounge experience for Terminal 6 flyers. I would expect dedicated business and Senator lounges.
The Terminal 6 project is part of the JFK Vision plan. The JFK projects were put on hold at the beginning of the epidemic, but are now firmly in the back-view mirror.
The ground was broken on the new Terminal One at JFK. The south side of the airport will be anchored by this terminal. According to the Port Authority, at least 10,000 jobs will be created by the project.
The existing Terminal 2 will be torn down to make way for the new terminal. The new terminal at JFK will be roughly the same size as the two new airports at the airport.
The new Terminal One will have 23 gates, a redesign of the check-in hall, and new arrivals spaces. There are 12 and 11 gates in the existing terminals.
Delta's Terminal 4 is undergoing a major expansion, which includes additional gates for Delta's operation, along with $100 million in renovations for the existing check-in areas, as well as a modified arrivals level curb to aid congestion.
American is modernizing its JFK home, Terminal 8. Premium lounges and other amenities are expected to open in the coming weeks.
