The two sides had talked about a contract.

Linval Joseph was signed by the Eagles to address their defensive line.

He had 27 tackles, six sacks and 13 quarterback hits in 17 games for the Buccaneers in 2021.

One of Philadelphia's biggest weaknesses was exposed when it lost to the Washington Commanders in Week 10. Washington ran for over 150 yards and scored two times.

The Eagles allow 112.3 rushing yards per game and are vulnerable through the middle. They have a power success rate of 86 percent and a stuffed success rate of 14 percent. The first measures how often opposing teams are successful on third and fourth downs with two or fewer yards to gain, and the second measures how often a defense stops a running back behind the line of scrimmage.

There is a defense that is terrible in short-yardage situations. The line needs Jordan Davis, the first-round pick in 2022, who was injured in Week 8 and missed the rest of the season.

The disruptive force who was named an All- Pro three times in his first five years is now 35. He was effective in a limited capacity with the team.

Signing Suh is the most straightforward way to improve the defense. There may not have been better options available.
